Baking with junior.

Up and about early, everyone else, including the dog were still asleep. Whats a girl to do? Grab a cuppa, enjoy the peace, switch on the tree lights, keep the curtains drawn and read my book... bliss..

Once everyone started to stir a quick shower and off out to do the weekly shop.Feeling ashamed at the amount of recycling we put out every week, I am making a concerted effort to try and reduce it, which means more home made snacks and cooking. I am hoping it might also improve the boys diets and help keep the food bill down.

Teenage boys like to graze, they need a never ending supply of food or the grumps set in. It has to be eat and go, no cooking by hungry boys here. This is the first week of trying things out so today we decided on sausage rolls and jam tarts. Not healthy, but quick and cheap,[ they still get fruit and veg daily]

No 2 son likes to cook, we decided we would have 1 dedicated day a week to cook, what ever takes their fancy. Its also my attempt to try and get no 2 son to do something that isn't powered by electric, which includes his kindle, I bought him a paperback yesterday !

As my house currently looks a Christmas burglar has left his kit here, I wanted easy so I cheated and bought ready made pastry!

A pack of 12 cheap sausages from good old Aldi, they didn't have sausage meat, and 1 packet of pastry made 12 lovely big sausage rolls, intended for packed lunches as well as fridge snacks. They dint last long once they came out of the oven.

not bad for juniors first attempt, think I will use puff pastry next time, and cut them in half, they might last longer!

I had 2 packets pf pastry so jam tarts were on order

This was what was left when I took the photo, were down to about 4 now..there were 18 jam tarts and 2 jam pasties..The jam was from Aldi too, so really cheap make, unfortunately I don't think it will be cost effective as no 1 son has a homing device for fresh cooked food! Its a good job hes active..I was pretty impressed with juniors jam pasties.

Hubs was busy too, getting the pickles ready for Christmas,

chilli pickled onions, nom nom...

I bought 30 eggs today  so they will be made ready over the next day or so.. yes we do like some pickled goods in our house! I might even push the boat out and do some pickled red cabbage!

I will leave you with a fabulous picture of the Clifton Suspension bridge firework display tonight to celebrate the 150th Birthday of Brunel, as all the roads around it were closed early, and it was going to be packed we decided to stay home and watch it on the live stream, after watching it I really wish we had gone down.

If you want to see some more of the amazing show take a look at the website where the picture came from he has some fabulous pictures, fireworks at Clifton suspension bridge, by Phil Hooper.

  1. How lucky to have a son who enjoys cooking - and so useful for him in the future. I pickled eggs all the many years we had hens, but although my husband loved them, for some reason I could never fancy one and have never even tasted a pickled egg ( but love pickled red cabbage)
